How To Deal With Art Block

Writer: Emily LueckeEmily Luecke

We all dread the feeling: no matter what you try, none of your pieces seem to turn out right. That’s if you can even get something on the canvas. Art block can be an artist’s worst nightmare, especially when there’s no end in sight.

Here are some of my tried-and-true methods for battling art block.

Take a break

Whether you take a break for a couple days or a couple weeks, make sure you allow time for your creative juices to replenish sometimes. Don’t get burnout trying to force creativity. Instead, try focusing on other hobbies or start binge-watching that show you’ve been meaning to start.

Do a study

Doing a study of things such as lighting or landscapes allows yourself to have a creative break while expanding your skillset at the same time. Personally, I love to try studies of elements I’m not familiar with to switch things up.

Draw in your comfort zone

Whether it’s your favorite character or a color palette you love, drawing something you are familiar with is a good relaxer. This helps take away some of the stress of creating something completely original. Try drawing your childhood favorite character and use that nostalgia as inspiration.

Follow a tutorial

Following a tutorial is always a good way to warmup your skills and can give you a nice change of pace from your regular drawing habits. It also requires less brainpower than creating an entire piece from your imagination. (Not to mention you’re growing your skills as an artist).

Look at art books

You can find inspiration through concept art books or even just your favorite artist’s work. When struggling with art block, turn to those who inspire you. Some of my favorites are The Art Of… books.

Sometimes art block can feel like it’s never going to end, but just remember it’s always temporary. Your creativity will always come back in one way or another. Every artist struggles with art block, so you are not alone. Don’t let the fear of a creative block get in the way of your love of art. You got this!
